In Your Store

Valentine’s Day Make and Take

Papercrafting Month has just come to a close; now that you’ve spent the last few weeks promoting paper, start making something with it! Use your social channels and e-mail list to promote a fun papercraft project and set up a free in-store activity.

Tip: Keep it simple! Choosing a project that can be completed in less than 10-15 minutes using only a handful of materials cuts down on prep time and makes these activities more fun for customers and less stressful for your team.

Geometric Paper Heart Wall Hanging

Materials

  • Surface to apply paper pieces (Take a tip from the “Tidy up” craze and recycle a surface for in store activities! Have any off-trend colored mat board kicking around…?)
  • 10 pieces of Origami paper, decorative paper or colored paper cut into squares
  • Scissors
  • Washi-tape for the quilted/3D texture or a glue stick for a flat version of the project

Directions

Fold square paper on the diagonal; use the fold line as a guide to cut or cleanly tear your paper into triangles.

Arrange triangles in the following pattern onto surface (colors are used to indicate direction of the triangles, not necessarily the pattern the papers should take).

Adhere pattern to surface.

Provide a list of sweet / corny quotes that customers can copy, if they’d like:

“I love you more than I could ever promise because you take me the way I am.” – Ingrid Michaelson

“Your lips are like wine, and I want to get drunk.” – William Shakespeare

“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength, while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” – Lao Tzu.

“You can’t blame gravity for falling in love.” – Albert Einstein

“Love is an irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.” – Robert Frost

“A gentle heart is tied with an easy thread.” – George Herbert

Whatever Works

“Someone on my team likes to make examples and experiment with materials.” See if they are interested in creating a few examples; display the finished products in a few different formats. For example: a Valentine’s Day card, the heart in a floating frame without a paper backing, or a mug with the same pattern, painted with porcelain markers

“We are doing a Papercrafting or Valentine’s Day related event!” Hang these samples in store in conjunction with advertising for at least a week prior to the event to draw attention and interest.

“We have no space for a make and take table… but my customers might like to try it at home!” Consider offering a free handout with directions for customers; make a couple kits with the project materials, include the instructions and have them by the register for the week leading up to Valentine’s Day.
