Paint a Bookmark Inspired by Van Gogh’s Starry Night

Artist: Cat Kerr for Royal Talens North America

Reading is much more fun with your own hand painted bookmark to keep your place between the pages of your favorite stories. Van Gogh’s popular painting, The Starry Night, offers the perfect imagery for kids to experiment with the shimmer and shine of metallic watercolors and pens on black paper. You can either paint both sides of the bookmark in two different colorways, or create a simple white backer to write the names of books you want to read next.

Supplies

  • Galaxy Stencil 6×6 by Carmen Medlin for TCW (Optional – you can use another spiral style stencil or the spirals can be hand painted)

1. Cut a piece of Van Gogh black watercolor paper into a 3” wide strip (any length).

2. Brush Van Gogh watercolors through the stencil in three locations and let dry. Don’t use too much water; keep the consistency of the paint somewhat creamy. Clean the stencil after each application. OPTIONAL: paint loose spiral shapes in the absence of a stencil.

3. Draw loose outlines around the watercolor shapes with the White #10 Gelly Roll pen.

4. Draw more squiggly shapes to fill in the black space between the painted areas with the Metallic Gelly Roll pens in two of the blues.

5. Fill more spaces inside and in between shapes with the Stardust Metallic Gelly Roll pen.

6. Add dots and stars using the Yellow Metallic Gelly Roll pen.

7. Brush touches of gold watercolor in the center area of the stencil design – let dry.

8. If desired, trim white cardstock to approximately 2.75” wide and glue to the back of the bookmark to write a list of favorite books with the Sakura Micron #05 black pen.

9. Round the edges of the finished bookmark with a pair of scissors.
