At MacPherson’s our hearts goes out to our customers in Puerto Rico as they deal with the aftereffects of Hurricane Maria. Massive power outages have lead to terrible food and water shortages. Clean up will take years. We have heard from a few of our customers and, while they are ok physically, long-term survival is the immediate challenge.

The recent hurricanes have devastated many parts of the U.S., and victims’ needs are huge. A group of us at MacPherson’s spontaneously came together with a plan for how to help. Our team members chipped in $3,635 of their own money, with a matching pledge from MacPherson’s. These funds will go to various organizations in  Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico.

Our clothing drive collected garments which will be sent to the affected areas. We also heard that shelters in Houston, TX asked for supplies to keep children and adults occupied in the shelters while getting back on their feet. We identified two shelter organizations in Houston and, working with our Inventory leader Tammy Kyle, are sending thousands of dollars of coloring books, canvas, coloring pencils and paints in response to their request.

  • One shelter is run by the City of Houston for displaced citizens.

  • The second shelter is run by the 7th Day Adventist Church.

Hurricane Harvey Houston, TX Art Stores Quick Report

Hurricane_Harvey (1)

Art Supply (Vikki Trammell & Ben Russell)  No flooding. The store will open on Wednesday. Vikki Trammel is asking NAMTA members for donations of art supplies for those artists who have been hit so hard.  She will be working through Printmatters (she is on the advisory board) and another non-profit to make your donations tax deductible. At this time, if you are able to contribute, please begin to set the product aside and as soon as the Houston area is able to receive deliveries again we will notify you and provide detailed shipping information.
Texas Art Supply Co. stores at Montrose and Voss are not flooded, and have only experienced minor damage. The Montrose location is planning to re-open Wednesday 8/30.  Unfortunately, due to flood conditions on local roadways, the Baybrook store is inaccessible and its status is unknown at this time. Complete updates on company personnel are not available at this time, however, there have been confirmations that several employees experienced flooding in their homes. Our credit manager suffered severe flooding at her house. She lives in a flood-prone area, and has suffered almost total loss twice before this flood, and I was told the she was informed by her insurance company that they will not rebuild/replace at her current address. She will have to move this time. As for logistics in and out of the area, it will probably take a while before things get normal here. Some of the freight terminals may be under water. If you have any shipments headed our way it would probably be a good idea to hold onto them for awhile.
Jerry’s Artarama in Houston is reporting the store is not flooded, however, due to flood conditions on local roadways the store is inaccessible and the manager (Daniel Elliott) has not been able to confirm any potential damage. Pending his ability to navigate the flooded roadways, the store will attempt to re-open on Thurs 8/31. One employee is confirmed to have experienced flooding damage at their residence.

According to the online art news blog ArtNet News, the unlikely winner of the Trump presidency? Art supply stores! ArtNet reports that “of the estimated 3.3 to 4.6 million protesters who took to the streets around the country on the Women’s March on January 21, many carried handmade signs denouncing the new administration and its policies. But just how much have sales for poster board and other related art supplies gone up since Trump took office? According to NPD Group, 2.7 million poster and foam boards were sold in the US in the week leading up to the post-Inauguration march. That’s 33 percent more poster board that was sold during the same time period in 2016! For foam board, sales were up 42 percent. Altogether, a total of $4.1 million in poster and foam board sales were logged in that week alone. For the entire month of January, more than 6.5 million poster boards were sold. Poster-hungry protests continued on International Women’s Day on March 8.” For a local slant on the same story for the San Francisco Bay Area check out this Link
