Industry News

Thursday, September 25th, 2014

A farewell message from Stu Beattie, MacPherson’s Chairman of the Board:

I’ll be retiring from MacPherson’s at the end of October with only great memories of our company and industry – 26 years that have rushed by, seemingly in an instant. What I shall miss most is those with whom I have worked both at MacPherson’s and in the customer and vendor art materials community. I’m pleased to include in that group our competitors who always have competed with MacPherson’s fiercely but fairly.

I will continue to serve on the MacPherson’s Board of Directors and am excited to play an ongoing role in the Company’s success. Louise and I are looking forward to seeing more of the world and to enjoying more time with our children and grandchildren. I have recently worked with my family to build a small business that has been a lot of fun, and I’m hoping that my greater involvement won’t dramatically diminish its success.

Changing the habits of 26 years will be an adjustment for me, and I would be delighted if any of you wanted to stay in touch.

After October 31st please direct your MacPherson’s questions that normally might have gone through me to Jim Semitekol, EVP and COO,, Natasha Nicholson-Bjerre, Vice President, and of course Frank,

Stu Beattie

Justin Wraight, International Sales Director  will be leaving ColArt at the end of October after 23 years.

Montana Artist Collective Annual Meeting in San Francisco

After a day of meeting and brainstorming project ideas, the Collective hit the city to paint. Wane, Steel, Risk, Dmote, Atom and Sever spent the following day painting a wall in San Francisco’s Mission District. A lot of fun and laughs were had. Keep an eye out for more actions made by the Montana Artist Collective in the near future.

New Strathmore Videos for Retailer Social Media Marketing

Thursday, September 25th, 2014

Strathmore Artist Papers is excited to be adding to their video libraries. They have started to launch short product videos for 2014, and are continuing to build the product video library this fall. They are also expanding their archives of Online Workshop video materials as we are moving towards the end of the year. Last, but certainly not least, they’ve also added an Artist Spotlight video, which resonates with many artists.

Strathmore’s new Toned Paper and Printmaking Paper product videos are now available online! Like all of their product videos, these new additions are perfect to share on your retailer social media sites. They are also a great tool to educate in-store staff on product uses and specifications. Product videos are perfect to run in your store on a continuous loop generating excitement about Strathmore products with your consumers. The videos will continue be published on Strathmore’s website at as they are created, and on Strathmore’s social media sites which include FacebookYouTube, Twitter and Pinterest. Product videos will also be available on DVD per requests. Closed caption versions of product videos are now also available!

Strathmore has also introduced a brand new “Artist Spotlight” video featuring their Printmaking line. In this video, printmaker Ben Rinehart gives a behind the scenes look at what inspires him, how he got started in the field of printmaking and why teaching is so special to him. Many artists can relate to some of his insights, and the passion Ben has for his artwork is easy to spot. Strathmore genuinely appreciates the enthusiasm and emotional connections that so many artists have for their work and for Strathmore products, and wanted to showcase real artists and their love for their art forms.

As a reminder, their online video library also includes all of their previously published Workshop Series videos, and they are also available on our YouTube channel.

These videos encourage creativity and educational activities around topics artists have requested. As we move toward the conclusion of Strathmore’s 2014 Workshop Series, this season’s workshop videos will be posted on YouTube at the end of the year. Workshops and supporting video lessons are always free of charge, and offer great information on techniques, styles, materials and project inspiration.

Arches Watercolor Paper Availability Update

Thursday, September 25th, 2014

Gerard O’Mahony, Canson’s USA CEO recently sent a letter acknowledging and explaining shortages of Arches Watercolor Paper. The culprits have been insufficient capacity at the Annonay France paper mill, inefficiencies and prioritization. All have been addressed by Hamelin’s new VP of Fine Art Papers, but improvements in supply will be challenged until sometime in November.
