More GOLDEN Heavy Body Colors for 2018, Same Footprint

GAC Light Value Colors

All Heavy Body retailers can now offer a greater selection of colors within their current GOLDEN cabinets with the introduction of a new tube shelf for 2 oz. Heavy Body cabinets that increases the tube count from 10 to 12 per shelf. That’s a 20% increase in colors with no additional space required! And just as conversion kits are available, GOLDEN is also launching several new colors!

Cobalt Teal is back! Very popular when it was previously available, GOLDEN had to discontinue it when the pigment became unavailable. The launch of QoR watercolors helped us discover a new pigment supplier, so we can bring this very desirable single-pigment color back to Heavy Body acrylics. The Phthalo and Titanium blended Teal will remain available.

New Light Value Colors! For 2018, seven new light value colors add bright and convenient blends to what is already the most extensive palette in artist acrylic colors. Colors include Light Bismuth Yellow, Light Orange, Titan Violet Pale, Light Phthalo Blue, Light Phthalo Green, Titan Green Pale, and Titan Mars Pale.

New Yellows with Exceptional Lightfastness! We continuously test our products to make sure that we are providing the best materials available to artists. Recent tests reveal that the pigments PY3 and PY73, used in our Hansa Yellow Light and Hansa Yellow Medium formulations no longer meet the highest ASTM Lightfastnesss standards. To provide the bright and lightfast yellows artists need we are introducing Benzimidazolone Yellow Light and Benzimidazolone Yellow Medium across all acrylic color lines in 2018. The Hansa colors will remain available in open stock tubes, however, the new Benzimidazolone colors will replace Hansa Yellow in sets beginning February 12, 2018.

All of these changes are highlighted in MacPherson’s Spring Catalog. For specific information regarding conversion kits and color changes detailed above, reference the MacPherson website OEX Golden or contact your MacPherson Sales Representative.

Williamsburg Adds Seven NEW Colors in 2018!

WBNewColorBlade_462X1200Williamsburg Handmade Oil Colors will be introducing seven exciting new colors exemplifying the beauty and quality of our paints while extending the largest range of oil colors available anywhere. Additionally, in response to concerns surrounding the use of zinc oxide in oil paint formulations we have reformulated 12 color blends to be zinc free.

These new Williamsburg colors for 2018 exemplify the beauty and quality of our paints while extending the largest range of oil colors available anywhere:

  • Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide
  • Tranpsarent Red Iron Oxide
  • Pyrrole Red
  • Pyrrole Orange
  • Nickel Azo Yellow
  • Bismuth Vanadate Yellow
  • Titan Buff

Space for new colors will be created from the discontinuation of Mars Orange Deep and Slate Black due to pigment availability. For existing planograms, conversion kits will be available starting February 12, 2018.

For further details, please contact your MacPherson Sales Representative.

Inspiring the Inner Artist in Everyone!

Iconic Art Brand Debuts New Look in the U.S.

Reeves, the iconic British art brand with more than 250 years of heritage, has launched an extensive rebrand to empower everyone to unleash their creativity! Following the global relaunch, Reeves’ debuted the “Show Your Colours” campaign in the U.S. at the September 28 re-launch event in NYC.  Attendees were encouraged to explore their inner artist, no matter where they were on their artistic journey. The event was a true hands-on experience and featured painting rocks at the ReevesRocks station and a customdesigned DIY gallery. At the event guests truly got the chance to show their colors.

Reeves has partnered with its new U.S. collaborator, Llew Mejia. Mejia, a New York-based illustrator, has designed for numerous national lifestyle brands and will lend years of experience with textile design, pattern-making and packaging to craft custom-designed art for Reeves.

“I’m stoked to work with Reeves and help bring this new, energetic campaign to life in the U.S.,” said Llew. “I believe that art is for everyone no matter your age or experience. A quick sketch, a streak of color — we’re all capable of unleashing creativity and expressing ourselves every day.”

Reeves’ re-energized look and feel is designed to spark imagination in anyone, from established artists to the occasional doodler. Regardless of skill or knowledge, all creativity can start with a pen, pencil or brush, and Reeves is on a mission to make art accessible to all. As part of the rebrand, Reeves has launched a bold, new logo featuring a symbolic ‘r’, which is certain to become its signature. A redesigned website and social channels feature how-to videos, product information, inspiration and more.

The rebrand also includes a refresh of Reeves’ entire product portfolio, including new packaging for Paint By Numbers and Scraperfoils, providing the tools you need for your creative journey.

“It’s our goal as creative innovators to help people realize their full artistic potential by finding inspiration in their daily lives,” said Mahogany Ligon, Brand Director for Reeves. “Art is as much about coloring outside the lines as in, and we want to break down the barriers between fine art and the everyday. Through our ‘Show Your Colours’ campaign, Reeves will continue to encourage each of us to unleash creativity.”

To experience the new Reeves firsthand or to find a retailer near you, visit or @WeAreReeves on Instagram or Facebook. Share your Reeves masterpiece with the world using the hashtag #wearereeves.

About Reeves: Reeves, part of the Colart group, is one of the world’s leading creativity and lifestyle brands. Boasting a 250-year-old history of educating and inspiring artists across the world, Reeves’ ambition is to cater for a broader audience, providing the tools and inspiration to unleash creativity across the world.

Jacquard 4 oz. Piñata Assortment NOW AVAILABLE

Friday, October 27th, 2017

Now available through MacPherson’s: Jacquard’s Piñata Alcohol Inks in a 4 oz. size! The Piñata product line and NEW 4 oz. Piñata display both come with 22 colors (including three NEW metallics: Copper, Brass and Pearl), Piñata Clean Up solution and Piñata Clear Extender.

When Jacquard launched Piñata Colors in 2002, alcohol inks were virtually unheard of. Since then, this unique category has become extremely popular, especially with artists working on non-porous surfaces like tile, Yupo, metal, glass, plastic, stone, leather, polymer clay and more. That is why Jacquard is offering a new display of 4 oz. inks.

Piñata Colors are highly saturated, fast-drying alcohol inks for any hard surface. Indelible and impervious to water once dry, Piñata Colors clean up with alcohol and re-wet themselves, allowing for unique effects and techniques not easily achieved with water-based systems. As a dye-based, highly transparent ink*, Piñata Colors are unparalleled for vibrancy, and only the most lightfast dyes have been selected for the palette. Acid-free with excellent adhesive properties, Piñata Colors have become the go-to inks for any non-porous surface.

The pigmented palette of Piñata inks has grown.  034 Copper and 035 Brass are beautiful metallic colors made from real metal pigments (like the super popular 033 Silver and 032 Rich Gold) that glisten and shine. The metallic white 036 Pearl is made with super reflective mica pigment and is terrific for mixing with the dye-based colors to create entirely new palettes of pearlescent inks. These three new colors are opaque, lightfast and shine with unparalleled luster. The Piñata metallic colors are perfect for scrapbookers and paper artists whenever a true metallic is desired, as well as for oil painters, acrylic painters, window painters, sculptors and crafters of all kinds.

*030 Blanco Blanco, 032 Rich Gold, 033 Silver, 034 Copper, 035 Brass & 036 Pearl are pigment-based, super-opaque and entirely lightfast.

Jacquard Body Art Family

Wednesday, September 27th, 2017

With the new addition of Jacquard’s ‘Jagua Temporary Tattoo Kit’, there are now three body art kits available in the Jacquard Body Art Family; Mehndi Henna Kit, Glitter Body Art Kit and Jagua Temporary Tattoo Kit. Jacquard is now your one stop for premium and specialty body art materials.

Jagua and Henna are all-natural and can be mixed together to create a color pallet that ranges from the deep blueish black of Jagua to the warm burnt reddish brown of Henna.

JAC9515-Jagua-Kit_2x2.5_CMYK (3)JAC9500_MehndiHenna_2x2.5_CMYK

Henna is natural colorant made from the dried leaves of the Lawsonia inermis shrub that produces a beautiful orange-brown color.   Henna has been used for thousands of years to stain skin (mehndi), fingernails, hair, leather, silk and wool.

Henna on hand

Juice from the unripe Jagua fruit (Genipa americana) has been used for body adornment for millennia. The Amazonian fruit produces a permanent, bluish-black stain that, like henna, lasts approximately 1-2 weeks.

jagua hand

Jagua is great for accenting henna designs, mixing with henna for various shades of “hengua,” or used on its own for beautiful, dark colored designs. Because it looks so much like a permanent tattoo, it is increasingly used to test drive tattoo ideas and embellish existing tattoos. Jagua is widely available in liquid or gel forms that have very short shelf lives unless refrigerated. Jacquard’s dehydrated jagua powder performs just as well as gels, is free completely of impurities, and has an extremely long shelf life. Certified safe, easy to use and with better economy than liquids and gels, powdered jagua is truly a game changer for serious body artists!

These are a perfect gift for the Holidays and are on sale with MacPherson’s through December 31st. The glitter kit is a big hit for kids; party activities, Halloween, festivals, parades or to add accents to our other body art kits.

How Good of a Deal are Big Tubes? Gamblin Explains

Wednesday, July 26th, 2017

Large tubes of Gamblin are an outstanding value for the artist. It’s no wonder half our paint is sold in large tubes.

Artist’s Grade
In our Artist’s Grade range, artists save 39% on Series 1 colors versus buying 37ml tubes. Across all series, artists save an average of 36%.

Gamblin 1980
For serious students and working artists painting big, large tubes of 1980 are an even better deal. On Series 1 colors, artists save 46% versus buying 37ml tubes. Across the entire range, artists save an average of 38%.
Compare these savings to other brands and you’ll find Gamblin’s discounts for buying big exceed what most other brands offer.

What else should I know and what other ideas do you have?

Get your big tubes of Gamblin out of boxes and up into hanging tube racks. Some retailers still merchandise large tubes of Gamblin in their boxes, piled on shelves below waist level.
Increase turn by 25%+ by better merchandising this product in hanging-tube racks. Even better, we’ll ship you one for free. Just contact your MacPherson’s Account manager or Lauren ( at Gamblin and we’ll  get you taken care of. Our hanging tube racks measure 16″ wide. Each rack holds 24 colors.
Range of Offering
MacPherson’s is well stocked with the full range of Artist’s Grade and 1980 oil colors in 150ml tubes.

As mentioned above, half Gamblin’s paint is sold in large tubes. Take a look at your Gamblin sales versus other brands and consider expanding your offering of 150ml tubes.

Need a custom order to expand from where you are into a standard assortment? No problem. Contact your MacPherson’s Account Manager or Kaitlin or Lauren at Gamblin (503-235-1945) and they’ll get you squared away.

Chartpak’s New Paper Lines Explained

Wednesday, June 28th, 2017

Chartpak, Inc. is excited to announce that their new paper lines are now available and ready to ship!

Pad Spread

Chartpak prides themselves on creativity which is why it is an integral part of their legacy. They strive to deliver to each artist a professional range of products – and this new paper line is no exception. Developed for artists by artists, recognizing that each brush stroke, each sketch, and each rendering deserves added benefits and unique functionality.

The papers, as well as the features built into the pads, were developed and tested by Chartpak’s staff of professional artists and their network of art ambassadors. Chartpak worked diligently with their mill partners to ensure that the papers were designed to perform at high-quality levels for the artist.

Chartpak incorporated features such as In and Out Pages™ designed with Dome Lock™ Technology to ensure that any sheet could be removed, repositioned and even transferred to another pad.

They also created some of their pads with Ink Block Panels which protect the pages underneath the artwork sheet.

From Chartpak’s hands to the artist’s hands, this new paper line continues to get rave reviews.

Marcia Neblett, Professor of Foundation Studies at Savannah College of Art and Design recently said:

“I just wanted to share with you that my current summer students love the Grumbacher® Mixed Media, 9 x 12 inch IN and Out” Sketchbook. We’ve already made use of the “in and out” feature with a class critique and with submissions of the sketchbook work. The students absolutely love that they can put the pages back in! I’ll look forward to ordering more for my Fall Classes. Thanks so much!”

MacPherson’s Dealer Workshop – with thanks from Colart!

MacPherson’s Dealer Workshop – with thanks from Colart!

Thank you to all the retailers who joined us at the MacPherson’s Annual Dealer Workshop and checked out the launch of the Liquitex Cadmium Free range and Winsor & Newton surfaces. The annual conference is always a special time to connect with our retail partners and offer you a glimpse of new products. This year was no different as we offered demos and workshops for Liquitex in one room and Winsor & Newton and Arches in another.

In the Liquitex room, Cadmium Free demos were the focus. Attendees tested the product side by side with the Cadmium paints and saw just how comparable the two are. In addition to the demos, we unveiled a blind sampling kit concept that customers can use in their local art communities. Attendees were also impressed with the Liquitex Cadmium Free merchandising kits for offering a complete introductory merchandising solution.

Liquitex also launched the new Basics sizes and Basics planogram at the event, and customers were excited about the various Liquitex sets, particularly the $14.99 BASICS Acrylic Mediums Textures & Effects Set. In the Winsor & Newton room, we explored the newly launched surfaces: the Stretched canvas and Watercolor paper. We also featured Arches’ new free-standing floor display, five-sheet pack, and the 16 x 20 oil sheets. Both were a big draw for attendees.

Throughout the workshop, we discussed the features and benefits of the new ranges, as well as product pricing, merchandising opportunities, launch materials strategy, and specials.

Thank you again to MacPherson’s and all the retailers that attended the conference.

A Note From Steve Chamberlain, ColArt Americas

Monday, May 29th, 2017

Dear Valued Customer,

As many of you will recall, from our first trade newsletter last November or from various conversations and communication with any number of the Colart team, we went live with our new ERP system, M3, on schedule at the start of March. We are acutely aware that this has been a challenging time for many inside of Colart and more importantly for you our customers. Be it the year end closure for a full stock count (important to ensure integrity of information transfer to M3) or the slower than expected restart after M3 ‘Go Live’ we appreciate the support you have shown us. When any business moves to a completely new platform there are always challenges – some businesses virtually grind to a halt for months on end.

We have had some challenges, mainly around receiving stock into the Distribution Center, but the business is starting to get back up to speed. Some of our fill rates have been, and continue to be, lower than we want and for that we apologize. We did have some difficulties receiving stock and making it available for orders but we believe we have ironed out most of the technical issues. We expect to see only improving service levels and fill rates from here – albeit we believe May will still be below the levels we aspire to. The new M3 system, already integrated on many other Colart sites, will ultimately help us to service you, our customers, and with you our consumers better for many years to come.

Thank you again for your continued support of Colart, our brands and our people. Should you have any questions please reach out to your local representative in the first instance.

My best regards

Groovy, Baby! Jacquard Goes Hippie Retro

Monday, May 29th, 2017

7 Shirt Comp

Although resist dyeing techniques (including ones involving binding of fabric prior to coloring) date back at least 2,500 years, tie dyeing as it has come to be known is a distinctly American artform that was born out of the freewheeling hippy days of California in the 1960’s. Even today, multi-colored tie dye motifs like the rainbow spiral are widely associated with the love movement that took America by storm some forty years ago. Though tie dye has been absorbed into more mainstream aesthetics in recent years (see “tie dye chic,” for instance, a popular “yuppie” fad), it remains a markedly American tradition.

Believe it or not, Jacquard was the very first to offer a “tie dye kit”—a package containing everything you need to tie dye like a hippy/pro. Jacquard has been offering this kit since 1982, proudly manufactured in the San Francisco bay area, the birthplace of hippiedom! These days, tie dye kits abound in the US—there is a whole aisle of them in Walmart!—but they are all knock-offs of Jacquard’s original kit, mostly manufactured in China, and it goes without saying, none of them are nearly as high quality nor of equal value to Jacquard’s. The Jacquard Tie Dye Kits are still the gold standard, and it is a high bar they have set: the kits yield intense and lasting colors that to this day are unmatched by any other brand in the world!

With summer upon us what better way is there to celebrate than getting outside and tie dying your shirts, jean shorts, headbands, socks, bedding, dresses or underwear! All Jacquard’s Tie Dye kits are easy-to-use, and no two results are ever exactly alike. The design possibilities are endless and unique as fingerprints! They make great gifts and are wonderful party activities. Kits contain everything needed for dyeing (except the fabric): pre-measured Procion MX Dye powder (in convenient applicator bottles), Soda Ash dye fixer, rubber bands, gloves and easy-to-follow instructions.

Jacquard Tie Dye Kits are available through MacPherson’s in two sizes JAC9444 and JAC9445 retail at $11.99 and JAC9320 and JAC9325 retail for $19.99.

Trends Worth Watching

Wednesday, April 26th, 2017

In recent tracking of Art & Craft retailers email campaigns, some notable trends are emerging. We’re following these developments closely and we think it’s so important to note that we’ve included a new section in the MacPherson’s Back-to-School Buyers Guide. It’s chock full of Trend opportunities to inspire and activate consumer engagement in your store. Look for it in your mailbox soon!

Retailer Marketing Trends

Print advertising, in store flyers & newspaper ads, continue to be a challenge as costs rise and circulations fall. The trend seems to be moving in the direction of retailers actively building their email mailing list and mailings going out more frequently (at least 3 days per week). A superficial look at recent retailer activity shows that some of the best practices currently employed are uncluttered and simple visual presentations with many product offers or in-store events that can be scrolled through. Product drivers such as stretched canvas, Buy one, Get one (BOGO), Pencil Sets, Drawing media at the top of the list and repeated often. Here’s an example of an impactful and uncluttered email campaign from a DIY retailer serving another channel.eBlast Example

Impactful Store Windows

Notable quote found in ColArt’s booth at this year’s Paperworld show in Frankfurt; “… 52% of consumers are more likely to enter a store if there is an impactful window display” and “… 75% of consumers informed their friends about a specific store because they were impressed by the signage” – Kissmetrics

ColArt Window design

These colorful and impactful gift sets and window pedestals will be available in time for this holiday gift giving season.

Protests & Political Activism

For many citizens recent national events have sparked a desire to publicly state opinions and get involved in the national debate.  Marches, rallies  and meetings are peppered with DIY signs expressing all sorts of points of view. The common connection for retailers who sell art supplies is the need of the sign makers to have the brightest, most sparkly sign materials from the simple Sharpie to paints brushes, poster & foam board, stencils, glitter glue and anything you can think of to make a distinctive graphic impact.

Short Term Trends

DIY Slime Making

Tons of videos showcase simple and safe recipes for making your own highly personalized and creative slime. Be aware that there is some controversy about the use of Borax in slime recipes. Erroneously it has been reported that Borax contains Boric acid. According to scientists from the University of Kansas this is not the case and most slime recipes are safe.

Bob Ross

Bob Ross complete with his “fro” and mellow style is back with the announcement of his full video lesson catalog available on Netflix Streaming. We are seeing classes and demonstrations popping up in the most trending and urban areas.

Hand Painted Rocks

In an era of high profile incivility and public unkindness a kind of “flash trend” has emerged.  As far as we can tell it began in Washington State and it’s simple; find a rock, paint a rock creatively, and then hide it so it can be discovered to bring a smile to others.

Longer Lasting Trends

Personalization and Making

Young professionals are voluntarily choosing to live in trendy urban areas across the country. They like the cultural benefits that cities bring, but they are also keen on things they make to improve and enrich their personal spaces.

Personalization and Making Part 2

Tools that make bringing creativity to life easy and fun are a hot trend in and of themselves. At the top of this list are paint markers. There are paint markers and then again there are paint markers that people love. Posca seems right at the top of that list. Watch this video and see if you don’t fall in love!

DIY Planning & Journaling

The most widely known in this category is called Bullet Journaling®, a popular form of list-keeping, especially among the online community.

Sketching & Drawing

The easiest way back into creativity for young, busy and successful millennials is most often what they loved doing during their school years; coloring, doodling, sketching and drawing. For this crowd it helps if in-store Sketching and Drawing departments are simple to navigate, break down intimidation and feature specific areas for getting started.

Derwent Sketching & Drawing Center guides and inspires using organization, lighting & color

Derwent Sketching & Drawing Center guides, inspires and activates new store visitors by using organization, lighting & color

Hand Lettering

Another Sketching & Drawing rooted trend that’s on fire is Hand Lettering which may be a rebellion against the cold, sleek, digital environments we find ourselves in. It’s appearing everywhere, giving rise to tons of videos, store demos and classes. The beauty of Hand Lettering is its flexibility and accessibility. Almost anyone can do it!

Shibori Tie Dyeing

Shibori is an ancient, easy and distinctive cloth dyeing technique from Japan dating back to the 8th century. Most commonly done with indigo dyes, naturally vibrant and rich. Here is a simple and captivating demo.

Derwent ‘Drawn to Perfection’ Competition

Tuesday, December 27th, 2016

Smart and effective merchandising has proven to make a measurable sales and customer satisfaction difference in art and craft material stores. When done right, product and category merchandising helps your customers navigate easily to what they are seeking and subtly exposes them to new, unique products that can help them achieve satisfaction in pursuit of their creative expression. With this competition we are hoping to encourage your stores’ own creativity in merchandising as well as receiving a great reward incentive!

Details, Details, Details:

  • Submit at least 2 photos of your drawing section, in particular showing the DERWENT sketching and drawing supplies
  • The 1st photo series should be the way you are currently presenting it (i.e. before) and the 2nd photo series should be how you have reimagined it (i.e. after)
  • There are 3 contest categories with prizes awarded based on sketching and drawing department size
  • All prizes will be in form of credits at MSRP to be used for the exciting new DERWENT merchandise units and assortments that will be unveiled at the March 2017 NAMTA convention in Salt Lake City

  • Submit your entry to

Sketch Dept After

Hints and Tips:

  • Sketching and drawing is one of the fastest growing categories at art & craft retail. Even with the adult coloring craze cooling down, sketching and drawing continues to trend.
  • Sets are the entry point for most sketching and drawing customers, so merchandising placement and design that helps consumers find their way to the right technique and quality can build strong loyalty to stores and brands.
  • Open stock pencils are essential to developing long term serious fans as customers though the slower inventory turn makes it less of a profit center and more of a courtesy.
  • The “golden zone” for merchandising on store shelves is eye-level down to the average person’s waist. On the shelves below is a great destination location for items such as open stock and above is great for way finding, branding and promotional signage.

Strathmore Artist Videos & Newsletter

Sunday, November 29th, 2015

Strathmore has recently introduced a new category of videos called “artist features”. In these videos, artists give an inside look into their studio, creative processes, techniques, and what inspires them each day. Additionally, they also speak a bit about why they choose to work on Strathmore surfaces, and showcase some of their works of art.

The first artist featured in this video series is Graham Smith, who created a video entitled “Confessions of a Paper Junkie”. In this video, Graham takes viewers inside of his art studio and speaks about his creative process, and how he likes to draw using Strathmore sketchbooks. Graham is a professional Illustrator, and has spent many years teaching life drawing classes.
