Kathy Brennan of Preston Art in Louisville, KY reports their Spray Day event on August 3rd was a huge success. The public was invited to try out spray paints and paint markers including Montana Gold and the Montana Markers. There was even a family who came all the way  from Cincinnati to participate.  According to Kathy, “the event lowered the average age of customer for the day enormously.  One of our delivery vans was painted with Montana Gold.  We had a boost in sales that day, and a boost in spray paint since.” Congratulations to all!

Michaels and Aaron Bros announced their vendor partners of the year awards this month in Dallas. Michael’s top honor went to Plaid Enterprises maker of Mod Podge and Aaron Bros recognized Faber-Castell.

At Michael’s Michelle LaMar has been promoted to Associate Category Management Planner reporting to Paul Langemeier.

Marcus Brody Eastman (2)Southern California based Eastman Group reports some changes in their their manufacturer rep team. Michael Miller has decided to pursue his true passion in Graphics Arts and Ken will step in and take over the Northern California territories. In related news John Mark Eastman reports the birth of Marcus Brody Eastman. Marcus joined the Eastman family August 21st  at 4:25am, at 7lb. 13oz and 20.5in long.

With great sadness we report the passing of Bob Brown who was once the head of Daler Rowney’s USA operation in Cranbury NJ. Bob courageously fought pancreatic cancer and was an inspiration to others through his top-selling, Amazon-listed book, “The Ride Of My Life: A Fight to Survive Pancreatic Cancer.” He was 56,  when he died on Thursday, Aug. 8, in Columbia-New York Presbyterian Hospital, New York, N.Y. A memorial service was held on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at 1 p.m. in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main St., Flemington, N.J.

Pearl announced on August 10th that they would permanently close their Los Angeles store on La Cienega Blvd effective August 12th

Derwent Inktense offers strong, intense color with a translucent effect. Available as pencils or blocks, the jewel-like colors can be used dry and then washed out completely to leave an ink-like effect. The pencils are highly blendable with a wide 4mm color core and round barrel.

Baby time in the industry!

Welcome to the world Emma Jean, new born to Elizabeth and Seth Martin of Hyatt’s.  Emma Jean  is also the first grandchild for Greg and Lynn Hyatt.  She was born on May 9th at 6:14 p.m. in Amherst, NY and was 7 lbs. 9 oz.

And a hearty and healthy shout out to Jill and Lionel Flax on the birth of their son William Alexander at 8 lbs. 4 oz., on July 11th. Congratulations, too, to William’s grandfather industry pioneer Leonard Flax.

Anniversary celebrations are in the air! Back in 1938 Herman Flax opened up shop in downtown San Francisco. Though initially the store’s back room was also the family’s bedroom, with $100 to invest in inventory and a used cash register, it wasn’t long before Flax’s Artists’ Materials was on its way. This year is their 75th birthday!

We are sending all due congratulations to Andy, Cynthia and the entire Lenz family for the 45th anniversary of their company Lenz Art in Santa Cruz , CA. A hearty toast to the powers and strength of a well run family institution!

Big changes in Michaels merchandising department. Rich Gartmann, Business Unit General Manager for Art Materials is transitioning to a new position that will focus on driving efforts of the 2020 Vision Strategy Team. Idalia Farrajota who has joined Michaels from Hudson’s Bay Company in Canada, will take over Rich’s merchandising leadership responsibilities. In related news Stefani Sereboff has joined Michaels as Category Director (Department 81, Drawing Artist Supplies) reporting to Idalia Farrajota.

Michaels also announced it will issue $700 million in new debt to pay a dividend to its private equity shareholders, Bain Capital and The Blackstone Group, and 150-200 current and former execs who have been awarded stock options. Bain and Blackstone acquired the company in a 2006 leveraged buyout.

Alex Nielsen is resigning as President/CEO of SPC (Sierra Pacific Crafts). His last day will be Sept. 27 and the SPC board has begun a search for his replacement.

Namta LogoNAMTA and Craft and Hobby Association(CHA) will join forces by co-locating at NAMTA’s Art Materials World Trade Show and Conference in Pittsburgh next year(April 30 – May 2, 2014.) Both CHA and NAMTA exhibitors will occupy a portion of the exhibition space and the two associations will collaborate on an expanded series of program sessions. Additional details regarding the exhibition, registration, program sessions and other items will be announced in the coming weeks.

Dateline Glendale, CA. Swain’s Art Store was mistakenly harassed by hundreds after cops shot a dog in the town of Hawthorne in a SWAT team standoff. The police spokesman who gave the press the news happened to be named Lt. Scott Swain. Overzealous bloggers picked up the story and mistakenly put the art store of the same name at center of the far‐ranging outrage concerning the police dog shooting encounter. Somehow the bloggers connected some outraged readers to the store through its phone number and email address. The result was a deluge of angry phone calls and emails to Swain’s.

Golden Eagle Artist Supply in East Hampton, NY is closing after the summer, on September 30. On Thursday, July 4, the store shared the bad news in a Facebook announcement, explaining that the building’s landlord has leased the space to another tenant. Read the whole story here

USA Kolinsky Brush Crisis

What’s Going On With Kolinsky Brushes? By Tom Dix, President Global Art Materials
By now, most retailers have heard or become aware that importers and manufacturers are having difficulty importing kolinsky brushes into the U.S. Shipments have been halted and in some cases seized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This began at least six months ago and is now causing a serious disruption in the supply of brushes that use pure kolinsky hair. NAMTA members that import these brushes have been working together to try and find a solution, but so far we have been unable to find a permanent fix.

Trade in kolinsky hair is managed by the provisions set out in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Kolinsky hair comes from the species called mustela siberica. It is important to know that this is NOT AN ENDANGERED SPECIES, but because of a seldom used provision in CITES, trade in kolinsky hair requires CITES documentation. This includes a country of origin certificate. Most of the kolinsky used by the brush producing countries in Europe originates in China.
The problem is that countries in the EU and the UK require a country of origin certificate for incoming shipments, but do not require that it be on a CITES form. U.S. importers have been using these same forms, provided to us by the European countries, for years and they have always been accepted by Fish and Wildlife. Suddenly and without notice Fish and Wildlife is insisting that the country of origin certificate accompanying U.S. incoming shipments be on a CITES form.
The European CITES authorities insist that the documents they provide conform to the CITES regulations, are complete and valid. Since U.S. authorities now want us to present a different form with the shipments than what is provided to us, they are asking importers to present a document that does not exist. This, of course, has become an impossible task. What was a question about a form has evolved into a policy dispute over the last 6 months between CITES management authorities in the U.S. and Europe, and our industry is caught squarely in the middle.
We have always supported the purpose of the CITES regulations, but do not understand how the position our Fish and Wildlife Service is taking today advances the cause or purpose of the CITES treaty. The rest of the world doesn’t understand the position either and continues to freely trade in kolinsky brushes. At this point, it would be fair to say that Fish and Wildlife is not sympathetic to the financial harm to our industry or inconvenience to the artist consumer.
As an organization, NAMTA is working on our behalf to help find a solution and has asked for an urgent appointment with the head of the Fish and Wildlife Service to resolve this issue. We are hopeful that we will get a favorable reply in the next week. If we are unable to get the response we need to begin to fix this problem, the next step would be to come back to the NAMTA membership and ask for your support by contacting your congressmen, senators and members of the congressional subcommittee that has responsibility for oversight of the Fish and Wildlife Service.
