More GOLDEN Heavy Body Colors for 2018, Same Footprint

GAC Light Value Colors

All Heavy Body retailers can now offer a greater selection of colors within their current GOLDEN cabinets with the introduction of a new tube shelf for 2 oz. Heavy Body cabinets that increases the tube count from 10 to 12 per shelf. That’s a 20% increase in colors with no additional space required! And just as conversion kits are available, GOLDEN is also launching several new colors!

Cobalt Teal is back! Very popular when it was previously available, GOLDEN had to discontinue it when the pigment became unavailable. The launch of QoR watercolors helped us discover a new pigment supplier, so we can bring this very desirable single-pigment color back to Heavy Body acrylics. The Phthalo and Titanium blended Teal will remain available.

New Light Value Colors! For 2018, seven new light value colors add bright and convenient blends to what is already the most extensive palette in artist acrylic colors. Colors include Light Bismuth Yellow, Light Orange, Titan Violet Pale, Light Phthalo Blue, Light Phthalo Green, Titan Green Pale, and Titan Mars Pale.

New Yellows with Exceptional Lightfastness! We continuously test our products to make sure that we are providing the best materials available to artists. Recent tests reveal that the pigments PY3 and PY73, used in our Hansa Yellow Light and Hansa Yellow Medium formulations no longer meet the highest ASTM Lightfastnesss standards. To provide the bright and lightfast yellows artists need we are introducing Benzimidazolone Yellow Light and Benzimidazolone Yellow Medium across all acrylic color lines in 2018. The Hansa colors will remain available in open stock tubes, however, the new Benzimidazolone colors will replace Hansa Yellow in sets beginning February 12, 2018.

All of these changes are highlighted in MacPherson’s Spring Catalog. For specific information regarding conversion kits and color changes detailed above, reference the MacPherson website OEX Golden or contact your MacPherson Sales Representative.

Williamsburg Adds Seven NEW Colors in 2018!

WBNewColorBlade_462X1200Williamsburg Handmade Oil Colors will be introducing seven exciting new colors exemplifying the beauty and quality of our paints while extending the largest range of oil colors available anywhere. Additionally, in response to concerns surrounding the use of zinc oxide in oil paint formulations we have reformulated 12 color blends to be zinc free.

These new Williamsburg colors for 2018 exemplify the beauty and quality of our paints while extending the largest range of oil colors available anywhere:

  • Transparent Yellow Iron Oxide
  • Tranpsarent Red Iron Oxide
  • Pyrrole Red
  • Pyrrole Orange
  • Nickel Azo Yellow
  • Bismuth Vanadate Yellow
  • Titan Buff

Space for new colors will be created from the discontinuation of Mars Orange Deep and Slate Black due to pigment availability. For existing planograms, conversion kits will be available starting February 12, 2018.

GOLDEN Supports O+ Art Festivals

O+Nani Chacon

Founded in 2010 in Kingston, NY, by a small group of artist-activists, doctors and a dentist, O+ is a national nonprofit working in cities around the country to support the exchange of “the art of medicine for the medicine of art.” O+ brings together artist communities, health and wellness providers, and corporate sponsors to make possible the exchange of mural painting, music, poetry and other artistic performances for free medical services made available to underinsured artists. The organization’s year-round efforts culminate in one-day and weekend-long festivals in select cities.

O+Jia Sung

GOLDEN has been supporting mural artists participating in O+ for the last 4 years, but decided to heighten its participation this year in several ways:

    • GOLDEN donated paints to 5 mural artists for the Kingston festival, as well as paints to mural artists at the Poughkeepsie, NY, and Haverhill, MA, events earlier this summer.
    • Mark Golden spoke on a panel at the Kingston event in collaboration with the Good Work Institute, engaging the audience in the importance of building communities and how to sustain those communities in the future.
    • GOLDEN was a lead monetary sponsor for the Kingston festival this year.
    • GOLDEN sponsored 15 optometry appointments in Kingston.
    • GOLDEN supplied a bus for close to 30 staff members to attend the Kingston event and experience all that the O+ Festival has to offer.

Margaret Minardi from Ft. Salonga, New York, Northport East Northport High School

Collectively, these educators have been teaching for over 65 years.

The three selected educators are invited to participate in this two-week artists’ residency in a sylvan setting in upstate New York through the Sam & Adele Golden Foundation in July/August 2017. QoR Tubes

Reinvigorating the QoR® Watercolor Brand

In February Golden Artist Colors introduced an investment in pricing and consumer marketing to reinvigorate the QoR Watercolor brand. The long term success of QoR watercolor is a key pillar within the Golden Artist Colors vision. The brand’s patented Aquazol® binder, which enables high pigment concentration and increased application options, and its line of innovative watercolor grounds are loved by many artists who have tried the brand. Due to significant premium pricing and the introduction of an entirely new brand identity (QoR), the QoR brand was not delivering the consumer adoption rates that GOLDEN, or you, desire. To reset QoR on a growth trajectory of significant scale, GOLDEN is introducing an integrated long term investment strategy that combines a pricing recalibration with an amplified consumer marketing plan. Through these efforts it is our firm belief that the QoR brand will be recognized as one of the most important contributions to watercolor artists and to all artists that want to reach a new level of possibilities of performance, depth of color and permanence.

As part of that initiative, on May 6th, 2017 the MSRP on QoR will be reduced by 15%.  This investment is designed to maintain a price premium that Golden believes is warranted by product differentiation and performance, while making the brand more accessible to new users.  Below you will see the new pricing by series.

By now you should all be aware of the specific key areas of focus that have been put in place for this effort. Please contact your GOLDEN Sales Representative for any additional questions that you might have. Thank you for your continued support of all the GOLDEN brands.

GOLDEN Introduces New Packaging Utilizing Post-Consumer Recycled Material

In alignment with Golden Artist Color’s aspirations for environmental sustainability,  the company will begin introducing 25% post-consumer resin on some of its cylinder and jar packages. By collaborating with Cortland Plastics and Empire Emco, two local New York companies, GOLDEN was able to secure new containers and will introduce the packaging change to customers within the first quarter of 2017.

With this packaging transition, there will be no change to the dimensions or shape of the containers. It is possible that customers will notice a very slight change in the container color, with minimal cloudiness, as compared to current packaging.

Containers affected by the change are as follows:

  • Cylinders
    • 1 oz., 4 oz., 8 oz., 16 oz.
  • Jars
    • 8 oz., 16 oz., 32 oz.

GOLDEN will continue to consider future opportunities where utilization of post-consumer resin aligns with corporate strategies and initiatives. If you have any questions about this change, please contact Regulatory Affairs Director, Ben Gavett at bgavett@goldenpaints.com.

A New Look for GOLDEN Grounds, Mediums, Additives and Varnish

GOLDEN 2017 Non Color Label Group Shot

Golden Artist Colors offers the broadest range of professional quality acrylic colors, mediums and grounds, providing artists limitless possibilities for creative expression. While the most dedicated GOLDEN customers understand the full breadth of their offering, many artists could benefit from a deeper knowledge of gels, pastes, grounds and other non-color products. They have yet to unlock the full potential available to them through Golden’s complete product line!

There is a tremendous opportunity to engage with artists and educate them on the possibilities contained within this segment of the GOLDEN line. Golden’s re-stage is an integrated campaign that includes new packaging design, in-store signage and new educational videos. An update to the labeling on their non-color products is a significant part of their efforts to make this product segment more approachable to all artists.

Some changes customers will notice with the product line repackaging include the following:

GOLDEN Non Color New Label Info

  • Color added to identify product sub-categories previously identified on shelf talker color strips
  • Updated color strips further reinforce this segmentation and break the non-color product segment into smaller subcategories, making them easier to visually digest in aisle
  • Larger text increases readability
  • Name changes to accurately reflect intended use or maintain consistency

The following In-store signage and literature are available to support the change:

  • Layered Surfaces POP Blade – Item # GDM012943, Support Cost $80.00
  • Product Name Changes laminate sheet – Item # M013238, will be sent to all retailers in Q1 of 2017
  • Mediums and Additives Reference Guide – Item # M013240, Support Cost $1.25

New educational videos and workshops will also be available:

  • Educational video series launching Q2 of 2017
  • Expanded working artist classes in mixed media
  • Print advertising and social media focus on non-color products

New labels will start going on containers at GOLDEN February 1, 2017. It may take up to several months for these new labels to cycle through inventory at GOLDEN and MacPherson’s.

GOLDEN 2017 New Label Single Jar

GOLDEN Sales Representatives will be working to reset store rack tags and color strips between February and July 2017.

If you need more information about these changes or have additional questions, please contact your GOLDEN Sales Representative or your GOLDEN Customer Service Representative at 607-847-6154.

Golden Artist Colors Develops New Lecture Series on Materials for Oil Painting

Golden Artist Colors is considered a leader in technical advances and material applications within the art community. To further share technical knowledge, GOLDEN is developing a new lecture program which provides an overview of the various materials used in oil painting to help the artist make informed choices in their work. The lecture runs approximately two hours and covers several topics including ground preparation, nuances of various pigments and mediums, and how different material choices can impact creative results and archival quality. The lecture is largely brand agnostic but will highlight certain aspects of the Williamsburg line where appropriate. The lecture is in development and will go live sometime in Q2 2017. The lectures will be conducted by four professional artists, based in New York, South Carolina, California and Virginia, and will be available in limited geographies in 2017.

The primary venue for these free lectures is colleges and universities with limited appearances at retail stores, art group gatherings and trade shows.

For more information about this program, contact Pat Pirrone at Golden Artist Colors (ppirrone@goldenpaints.com).

GOLDEN Working Artist Program Accepting Applications for New Artists

Golden Artist Colors is currently accepting applications for artists in Texas, Arizona, Michigan, Kansas City, MO, and Salt Lake City, UT. This is a part-time independent contractor position presenting Lectures on the GOLDEN Acrylic System to colleges, art stores and art groups. This opportunity suits artists needing time to paint and devote time to their career, but who also love to educate and teach. Applicants should have a minimum of a BFA or the equivalent with a studio practice and show history. Those selected will receive in-depth technical training. The deadline for applications is February 28, 2017. For more information, or to apply, visit: Golden Artists Program. Just Paint #34 Hitting Mailboxes and Websites in December!

In the latest issue of Just Paint Mark Golden writes the first article in a series about painting on metal. In this article he details the types of aluminum to consider when thinking about using metal as a substrate in artwork as well as how to prepare these surfaces for the best adhesion possible.

In an article by Sarah Sands, she investigates Pigment Volume Concentration and its role in color. In this article she focuses on examining some of the ways a pigment’s color changes when used in different systems, such as watercolor, casein, egg tempera, acrylic, encaustic and oil.

Material & Application Specialist Cathy Jennings details the use of GOLDEN Archival MSA Varnish over transparent watercolor on paper as well as some other options for protection of watercolor paintings when on display.

This past September GOLDEN celebrated the artwork of Kikuo Saito with an exhibition of his artwork, ‘Color and Drawing’ at The Sam & Adele Golden Gallery (SAGG) at Golden Artist Colors. Gallery Director, James Walsh explains Saito’s career as an artist and the show in an article in this issue of Just Paint. If you’re not able to visit the gallery before the show comes down in March 2017, you can still see the show by taking a Virtual tour.

Lastly, in this issue GOLDEN celebrates their third year working with the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers. This year they offered extended residencies for three teachers advancing their own painting practice. Be sure to check this article out as well!

Look for these articles in your mailbox in December or at Just Paint. If you’re interested in receiving the electronic version of Just Paint, go to Just Paint Sign-up.

Golden Artist Colors and the Sam & Adele Golden Gallery (The SAGG) celebrate the artwork of the late New York artist Kikuo Saito with an Opening Reception on September 24 featuring a collection of his work titled ‘Color and Drawing’. Williamsburg Pigment Ratio – Perception vs. Reality

Recently GOLDEN received an email from a customer inquiring about the pigment load in Williamsburg Handmade Oil Paints. He visited a retail store and was told that the pigment load in these paints is lower since Williamsburg was acquired by GOLDEN. Please check out how a GOLDEN’S Material & Application Specialist responded to the inquiry:

“Thank you so much for taking the time to write and giving us an opportunity to respond to this rumor, which really has no basis. In fact, if anything, we have actually gone in the opposite direction and have often increased the pigment load whenever possible. So not sure how or why the art store representative felt differently. Would you be willing to let us know which store it was? We ask just to allow us an opportunity to correct the misperception and make sure people have accurate information.

As to how can you trust us, there are a few things to know. First, if any of our paint does not please you or live up to your expectations – for any reason and at any time – you  can always exchange it for a new tube of similar value or a full refund. Which means you will never be stuck with something you do not enjoy or cannot use. Few if any companies can make that type of promise or feel so certain about the quality of what they produce.

Second, I speak as someone who was one of the three people that ran Williamsburg in the mid-90’s to early 00’s, alongside Carl Plansky, where I provided technical support and helped in the development of many of the current colors. I considered Carl a good friend and my personal love affair with this paint goes back more than 20 years. When Carl passed away suddenly, which is why Williamsburg ended up joining Golden, original tubes I had kept from that early period, along with batches that were in inventory, provided us with a master standard for color and feel, and we have worked diligently since then to preserve each one of those nuances.

Third, Mark Golden and Carl Plansky were old friends who shared the same philosophy of making the most gorgeous paints of the highest quality bar none, with both companies sharing a sterling reputation for excellence and existing just 30 minutes apart from each other. When Williamsburg became a part of Golden, we brought over every staff member, mill and mixer from the original company and understood that we had not simply acquired a brand, but became trusted stewards to a legacy that was unique, magical, and precious. We would never, ever consciously fall short of the obligations we know we have to not only preserve the heart of this wonderful paint, but when possible, to even improve and further the quality it has come to embody.

Lastly, we would be happy to send you samples of our paints to try – and would welcome you to compare them to any other paints you might enjoy. And if there is anything else we can ever do to help, just ask!”

Sarah Sands, Senior Technical Specialist

If you or any of your staff members have additional questions, about this topic, please don’t hesitate to reach out to GOLDEN’S Material & Application Specialist team at 800-959-6543.

Working Artists will participate in training for new lectures in May, making new sessions available to retailers beginning in June. Full lecture descriptions are available on the website now at Options for GOLDEN Working Artist Lecture Demonstrations now include the following:

  1. Free GOLDEN Lecture Product Overview (Existing)

As always, attendees at any Working Artist Lecture will receive a selection of sample products to take home so that they can continue to explore the breadth and depth of GOLDEN professional products available.

The process for retailers to request one of the new lectures doesn’t change. In addition, increasing the number of lecture options does not increase the number of events Working Artists can conduct in a year, so be sure to connect with the artist in your area soon if you are interested in one of these new options for 2016. As you know, Working Artist schedules fill up fast!

GOLDEN Attendance at Upcoming Dealer Workshop

GOLDEN is looking forward to seeing you at the upcoming MacPherson’s Dealer Workshop from May 10-12 in Atlanta!

Knowledge is power! One of the key advantages independent retailers can leverage is the ability to offer customers superior service through educated owners and staff members that can share first-hand product knowledge. To assist retailers, GOLDEN has developed four “Demo-in-a-Box” kits that are designed for staff trainings, in-store demonstrations and presentations to art groups. Each kit includes step-by-step instructions, talking points, product and collateral.  On May 10, 3:30 -5:00 pm, experience each of the four kits (two are NEW!) and review the opportunities that theses kits present. The four kits are: QoR Watercolor Overview, Williamsburg Oils Overview, GOLDEN Acrylic Overview, and GOLDEN High Flow Acrylics.

Reminder: QoR® Watercolor Promotional Period

The QoR Watercolor spring advertising promotional period concludes on April 29, 2016. Advertisements should be planned accordingly.

JustPaint.org

GOLDEN’S role in the arts community has been to provide artists with the best tools to meet their needs. This includes an obligation to provide the most complete information available on artists’ materials from their laboratory, research, and collaboration with other innovators and material scientists. The Just Paint newsletter is a tool for sharing all of this information with retailers, so be sure to sign up for it via Just Paint Sign UP.

You can also read Just Paint articles online on www.justpaint.org. Remember, since the articles in justpaint.org tend to be shorter than the articles that appear in the annual print edition, they make great educational content when you are looking for news to share on your Facebook page or through email newsletters.
